The NOVA Institute

A "think-and-do-tank" in applied social sciences at West Virginia University.

The Nova Institute, housed in the Division of Social Work, School of Applied Social Sciences, Eberly College, is the hub of an organic network of teachers, researchers, consultants and practitioners interested in furthering a multi-national independent sector and genuine civil society through nonprofit organizations and voluntary action, opportunities for citizen participation in deliberation and dialogue, and service learning.

Mission


The mission of the Institute involves teaching, research and service in five principal areas:


1. Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action
2. Public and Strategic Conversations (Public Deliberation, and other approaches to citizen participation, community development and conflict resolution.
3. Civic Engagement through Education and Service Learning
4. Disaster response, with particular attention to the roles of volunteers and the resilience of victims.
5. Rural Community Services

The Institute is a collaboratory; a joint collaborative activity of faculty and academic professionals at the School of Applied Social Sciences, other faculty at West Virginia University, faculty at other institutions throughout the world and a variety of practitioners. It is built on innovative principles of organizational design
